Hoop Earrings Offer a Wide Variety of Style
Cleopatra loved her hoops in gold and encrusted with gemstones. Eva likes her hoops large and wispy, as evidenced by the hundreds of celebrity pictures of her. Cleo lived thousands of years ago and Eva is a contemporary desperate housewife, but they both would likely agree that gold and silver hoop earrings are a must have in any girl's jewelry box, no matter what time period she's from.
So, it is evident that this is one of the oldest styles that are still in demand today. Of course, over the years, this style has grown and changed to reflect the trends of the time.
Contemporary Style
Traditional gold hoop earrings were just that- a simple hoop. There are various widths and sizes, but the simplicity stays the same. This style can also be found in silver. But, just because it is simple and traditional doesn't mean it isn't stylish- it is classic contemporary style.
Variations of the traditional style include diamond hoop earrings, dangling charms from the top and the bottom and designs that fill in much of the open space inside the circle. Hoops within the hoop are an interesting twist on the traditional as well as side-by-side double or triple hoops.
Clasps
Because of the hoop design, there are a number of different closures depending on the style of the earring.
1. Snap Hinge- This closure is for full circles. The post either snaps down into a y-shaped piece or snaps up into an enclosure inside the hoop.
2. Hook- This is for the dangling style. Yes, hoops can also dangle from a hook closure.
3. Post- This is for styles that do not complete the circle and for some dangling styles as well. It is the basic post and back closure.
4. Hollow sleeve- The really big ones tend to employ either this closure or the snap hinge closure. One end is hollow and the other end has a thin post that fits into the hollow sleeve. Tension is what prevents the post from slipping back out. This closure is used on the very thin and flexible style.
Choosing the right size
Big hoop ones can be as big as 110mm in size. That's the kind that will swing and brush the shoulders. It is a very dramatic look, but not for everyone. Luckily, gold and silver hoop earrings come in all sizes between 18mm and 110mm.
Just remember when choosing this style that babies love to grab earrings and these give them a good handle. Also, think about hairstyle and if it will just get caught and tangled in the earring. Occasion is also important.
For a job interview, the really large size is not appropriate. It doesn't have to be the smallest size, but the look should be conservative. You don't want the interviewer staring at your ears instead of listening to you. But, for a fun evening out, put the hair in an updo and throw on the big hoop earrings. This lets the world know you are ready for some fun!
Have fun with this style and rest assured that this trend will be around for another thousand years! ( By Andrew Stratton )
