Jewellery & Earcare Guide - For All Your Earcare Needs
Articles By John M Brown

Clip earringsUp until recent times there was little or no restriction on the content of fashion jewellery. In short, manufacturers were free to use almost any base metal for the ear post and clips of your jewellery. The most popular addition to any piece of costume jewellery came within the plating process, and whether the article in question was to be silver or gold plated made little difference; the one common element in all plating of jewellery was - the use of 'Nickel'.

Nickel was added to enhance the shine of the earrings or necklet. Unfortunately it was a well documented fact that in certain cases the addition of nickel could cause an allergic skin reaction. Exact figures were never collated as to how many people this process actually affected, but that didn't stop the Eurocrats from acting with vigour. Soon the 'Boys in Brussels' declared that all earrings, necklets, rings and brooches, in fact - any fashion jewellery or accessory that came in contact with the surface of the skin must be 'Nickel free'.

Clip earringsSo to sum up - now, when you buy your fashion earrings or that pretty necklet, by and large they should be nickel free. This however doesn't mean that all ear-care stops there - Oh No !
There is still a basic hygiene code you should adhere to if you want to avoid future problems. This is where BACKS is on hand to help. Our Product range of replacement earring backs, clip pads, sterile studs and anti-allergenic solution has over the past fifteen years helped people manage their jewellery wearing problems. Available widely throughout retail outlets in the U.K. The Backs Earcare Products range is now available direct for your convenience.

Slip On Pads: A universal comfort pad to ease the ear-pinch felt with some jewellery. Simply slip the polymer sleeve over the arm of the earring clip and you jewellery is ready to wear.

Ear Clear Solution: This little bottle is probably the most important item in your jewel box. The solution is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-septic. Ideal for sensitive earlobes newly pierced ears and the general cleansing of earrings, necklets, bangles, and all forms of body jewellery (see separate section).

PROBLEMS AND SOME SOLUTIONS.

I don't want to worry you but that little hole in your ear lobe never technically heals-up.

Think about it - if it did - you wouldn't be able to wear you earrings! That's not to say that your body's defences won't protect you by closing the opening around the piercing but it does need a little help from you. True, there have always been people who could wear a rusty nail with little reaction, where others only have to scratch themselves to feel genuine pain or irritation. I think it is therefore safe to say that a degree of cleansing and maintenance can do no harm and will probably help avoid some of the more unpleasant reactions that can happen from time to time.

Q I am wearing nickel free earrings but still get irritation after a short while of wearing them.

A Your body cycle changes every seven years or so, just as you could once run a hundred yards in 16 seconds, now that may not be possible. So it is with your body, your PH balance may have altered causing an acidic reaction. Similar symptoms may be due to medication - eg. sulphur based drugs. Try using Ear clear Solution on both, the earring post, earring backs and ear-lobes. If the symptoms persist, change to clip earrings or try sterile studs for a short while, this way you will keep your piercings open. If your problems persist - consult your G.P.

Q My earrings feel heavy and move about more than they should.

A Somewhere in you jewellery-wearing past you have probably followed a trend for heavy or large earring. Worn over a period of time without the correct support they have literally stretched the holes. Change to an earring back with a built -in disc for support. Supabacks or Polymer Supabacks will help, they won't return your earlobes to their former glory but they should arrest any further stretching

Q I am still getting irritation even if I wear gold jewellery - why?

A The only pure gold is 24ct . Because 'Pure Gold' is too soft it needs to be strengthened with an alloy - the more alloy the jewellery contains the lower the carat rating eg. 9ct is the hardest wearing gold, 22ct is the softest and by definition the most pure. If you are having trouble with gold try wearing a higher carat rating, say 18ct. Once again don't forget to sterilize your earrings, this may be enough for short periods of wear.

Q My ear lobes are sore when I wear clip earrings.

A This one really is very simple, use a clip pad. This simple action will reduce the ear pinch caused by some of the more aggressive ear-clips.

Q How often should I change my earring backs.

A In an ideal world about every 3 months, a more realistic answer would be look at them closely - do they look past their sell-by date? If so discard them - after all you wouldn't wear an article of clothing for six months without washing it would you? Remember these earring backs are next to your skin, in some cases 24 - 7. Go on Throw Them Away!

Q I can't wear fashion or gold earrings without irritation.

A For reasons previously stated you have a severe allergic reaction try either a sterile stud like Hypo Studs, they are piercing quality and are therefore about as non-reactive as you can get . If this solution doesn't appeal, try sterling silver, ounce for ounce it's purer than 18ct gold.

Remember that regular cleansing of both the earring posts, clips and ear lobes can only help prevent infection and aids comfort.

BODY JEWELLERY

The popularity in the wearing of body jewellery is something nobody could have predicted. Sad to say, the information with regard to care of both the piercings and the jewellery itself has not kept pace.

Body piercing has been carried out on almost every part of the body from the face to, shall we say, more private parts. All these piercings have one thing in common -THEY MUST BE CLEANSED!

There really is no substitute for regular cleansing. Backs Ear Clear solution is ideal for cleansing all types of body jewellery. It's antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties cleanse and coat to avoid infection and irritation. The solution is best used on ear lobes and although it will not harm other pierced body parts, its immediate effects are a little too aggressive for use on sensitive areas.(For External Use Only).

Garnet ring

What To Look For When Buying Silver Garnet Rings Articles By Lee Dobbins

Garnet ringGarnet is well known to convey healing and protective properties, so it's no surprise that garnet rings are a popular jewelry item. People of the Middle Ages believed in the power of charms and soldiers, such as the Crusaders, would carry garnets called "carbunkles" as a protection against harm. Renowned for its healing properties, the garnet is said to cure both ills of the heart and blood as well as protect travelers.

Garnet rings, be it a single stone or multi-stone setting, are just one of the many types of jewelry featuring the timeless beauty of garnets. To get the best deal while shopping for this kind of jewelry, always use a keen eye and common sense.

Garnet ringMake sure you evaluate rings very closely before purchasing them. Inspect it at every viewable angle possible. Pay attention to the coloring and cutting details to make sure it has an even color without inclusions as well as a good cut. The gemstone's worth will be lowered if any flaws are found. Look carefully for these imperfections if you are buying a ring at a sharply reduced price.

Be sure to get many different shots of the item, and be sure to include close ups when shopping online for garnet rings. A reliable merchant will provide you with a guarantee or an appraisal. If you buy your ring online, you could get a much better deal.

Garnet ringKeeping your new ring in good condition will require taking special care of the stone. When getting prepared for your day or night out, you should opt to putting your ring on after you have used your perfumes, soaps, or other chemicals. Warm, soapy water and a Q-Tip allow you to clean your stone without harming it. Place your ring in a ring pouch instead of among the other jewelry in your box to maintain it's quality.

The beauty and color of garnet rings have been widely admired for hundreds of years. The familiar deep-red color of Bohemian garnets is the most popular, but garnets are also available in other colors. Garnets come in a rainbow of colors and black as well as colorless garnets are also available. Take all the colors into consideration when purchasing your ring.

Amethyst Rings - Buying and Maintenance
Articles By Ronny Eriksen
Amethyst ringsNowadays, buying expensive jewelry is a luxury that most of us cannot afford, but this does not mean that we have to deprive ourselves of some of the good things in life. Amethyst jewelry such as amethyst rings are the practical choice because they are economical and yet look elegant and classy so we can wear them for everyday use or on special affairs.

But before we buy our amethyst rings, there are a few things we need to look at to ensure that they can last us a lifetime. Thankfully, there are numerous websites that we can visit where we can learn more about this type of stone in jewelries.

BUYING AMETHYST RINGS

One of the things to consider when buying amethyst rings is the authenticity of the stone. Unfortunately, there is a large percentage of amethyst stones that are imitation stones.

Amethyst ringsGo to your trusted jeweler and ask whether the stone is an imitation or the real deal. We should take note that there are three grade levels for amethyst stones: Siberian, Uruguayan and Bahrain.

If we are looking to buy top-grade amethyst rings, then we should look for the Siberian stone. The lowest grade is Bahrain. Next to consider is the richness of the color. The deepest violet shade is the most expensive and prices go lower as the color range goes lighter.

A word to the wise: Oriental amethyst rings because these are not exactly amethyst stones, but sapphire stones that have a similar shade as that of the amethyst.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Taking care of our amethyst rings is essential to their longevity. The first rule of thumb is to avoid wearing them under direct sunlight as this can alter the hue of the stone.

Cleaning it regularly is also essential in keeping it in good condition for a long time. We can simply mix water and a light liquid soap and then dip a toothbrush with soft bristles to lightly scrub off the dirt.

Amethyst ringsIf our amethyst rings have other stones in them, we should also check on how to properly care for them, so we can keep the entire ring sparkling clean to make them look brand new all the time.

As for the ring where the stone is set, there are also ways for us to keep them clean. Sterling silver can be easily cleaned with a soft cloth, dampened with warm water and a mild liquid soap.

For gold, leave it in a mixture of warm water; about three quarters of water and a quarter of mild liquid soap. Polish both types of rings off with a dry soft cloth.

Cocktail rings

Choosing, Wearing and Caring For Mystic Topaz Rings Articles By Amy Everet

Cocktail ringsWhen you think about gemstones, do particular colours come to your mind? Do you think of the colour of lush wine or fiery sun-yellow; of celestial blue, ocean green or sweet, blushing pink? Well natural topaz comes in all of these shades, but man-made Mystic Topaz encompasses all these colours and more besides. This amazing new gem is created when natural or white topaz is heat-treated with a very light misting of titanium, or similar hard metallic substance,on its reverse to create a prismatic action and flood the stone with a veritable rainbow of colours whenever it catches the light.

Depending on the faceting and how the light shines on the gem, a brilliant spectroscopic display radiates from it. What woman would not want to have this magical little colour show on her fingers, ears or neck? Since natural topaz became 'Mystic' at the turn of the century, this beautiful gemstone has been used in rings, earrings and pendants and has grown in popularity with each passing year. Perhaps the best thing of all about it is that, in its natural form, it is fairly common (being produced all over the world, including the US) which makes it relatively inexpensive as a gemstone.

Cocktail ringsSo now you know what it is, the next question must be how to choose from such a vast range of Mystic Topaz rings on the market? Until you see this range for yourself, don't even attempt to shop for one, unless you are just beginning a collection! The best way to do this is to type the relevant key words - for example: 'Mystic Topaz' - into your usual search engine and then refine your search using the drop-down menu, to sort by relevance (price, seller rating or product rating), then sit back and prepare to be dazzled.

For a gold cocktail ring you can expect to pay anything from $100.00 to over $300.00, depending on the carat of the gold and the size of the gemstone or stones. Jewellery World offer some extremely pretty 9 ct gold rings with Mystic Topaz and diamonds, including a very stylish oval twist ring, which would grace any finger, at only $108.00, but the setting of Bonanzle's 5 stone ring (current retail price $239.99) will show off these exotic gemstones to spectacular advantage. Bonanzle also has a beautiful and very modern-looking 'Hot diamond' ring made by 'Iced Lilac' which, as its name suggests, has a small row of diamonds snuggling the gemstone to enhance its beautiful iridescence. At only $89.00, this lovely ring is an absolute steal!

Cocktail ringsOnce you have chosen your ring, do check its provenance before purchase. In the US, the Mystic Topaz process is patented and protected by Azotic Technology. AGTA, or the American Gem Trade Association also keeps a watchful eye on the sale of these gems and will want to hear of any problems. Another thing to remember is to give your beautiful gemstone the best possible care. Topaz is a very hard stone, but can be brittle. Its coating also is vulnerable, so avoid any abrasives, contact with harsh chemicals or scratching. If the surface is damaged, the beautiful rainbow effect of the stone will deteriorate.

Current Trends in Men's Fashion - Latest in Wedding Ring Design For Men
Articles By Allen L Smith

Men ringThe latest in men's ring design is all about new metal materials and embellishments. Plain gold and silver bands are no longer the only options, and the breakthrough of new metals has increased the diversity and endurance of men's rings. Precious stone embellishments, specifically in men's diamond rings, are now commonly incorporated into engagement, wedding, and anniversary bands giving rings a refined appearance and creating a better compliment to their spouse's diamond engagement and wedding ring sets. This article looks into men's wedding rings, and which trends are selling over others.

Top Trends in Wedding or Anniversary Rings

Men ring* Platinum Wedding Rings:Lead the market trends for a number of reasons. Though the material typically requires a higher budget than gold or silver, it is one of the most enduring metals out there, which guarantees that the ring will withstand heavy wear and tear. Unlike white gold, the metal does not tarnish, is resistant to corrosion, and will retain a beautiful shine. The metal is also hypoallergenic, and will not produce chemical reactions with skin. Men's diamond rings often use platinum as the setting for both status appeal, and elegance. Diamonds paired with platinum is quickly increasing in popularity for wedding rings today, and can be found in a number of wonderful designs.
* Tungsten Wedding Rings: A recent addition to our metal options over the last few years, is taking over men's jewelry market. Tungsten Carbide is a heavyweight metal very soft to the touch, but with the strength unmet by any other metal on the market, (except some forms of titanium). Typically less costly than platinum, tungsten offers the benefit of being nearly indestructible and scratch-proof, and will look new for life. This metal is mysteriously dark unlike the bright appearance of white gold, silver, and platinum. However, men have applauded these masculine tones as well as the strength and durability symbolizing their own masculinity and strength in their marriage. Diamonds are the most popular embellishments, normally channel set in these tungsten bands for a stunning appearance.
* Titanium Wedding Rings: Titanium is the popular choice by consumers for its more modern or urban look in contemporary jewelry. Titanium, also a symbol of strength, resists corrosive chemicals, and would be ideal for men who work in harsh chemical conditions. Like platinum, titanium is also hypoallergenic, and like tungsten, it's almost indestructible. Titanium rings are available in many different tints, so it appeals to ring designers for its flexibility in modern designs. Recently titanium ring designs have incorporated black diamonds in uniquely modern styles.
Men ring* Celtic and Paisley Wedding Rings: Have made it into this seasons top trends even though these designs have been around for centuries. Celtic patterns such as old styled Christian crosses and Celtic knots are not only elegant, they carry symbolism important to the couple or admired in other men's jewelry such as pendants and bracelets. Men's diamond ring options often include a number of Celtic designs since diamonds complement these ornate patterns in beautiful ways. Paisley designs are equally eye-catching and unique. With the rise in vintage trends, couples are looking for originality seen in antique jewelry, and so Celtic, paisley, and even braided wedding rings have seen a resurgence in fashion.
* Hammered and Two-Tone Wedding Rings: Are popular choices for men's wedding rings, because their subtle visual interest work wonderfully plain or with diamond embellishments without going overboard with intricate designs. One popular aspect of two toned gold rings is that their popularity is pretty much assured through the rest of time as white and yellow gold compete for utmost preference in jewelry fashion.

With a greater availability of these metals and the popularity of unique ring styles, we have opened up the future of design for men's rings. Men are also able to create custom designs and intertwine some of the favorite styles with their choice of metals.

Peridot ring

Peridot Rings - Great For Any Occasion
Articles By Thomas Brownstein

Peridot ringPeridot rings have been used throughout the centuries as an exquisite and elegant piece of jewelry. Since the ancient Egyptians, this particular gemstone has been highly valued for its aesthetic look and appeal. This is largely to do with the deep olive colored tones possible with a high quality peridot gem. Yet in recent times, a peridot ring is typically considered only for August related birthstone jewelry. This does a great disservice to what should be a well respected style of jewelry. People born in all months of the year should have the pleasure of enjoying a finely crafted peridot ring. And not merely for birthday related activities, but for other occasions as well.

Peridot rings look absolutely amazing when paired with other gemstones. One particular variety which has great appeal is the peridot eternity ring. This style has a large peridot gem at its center and a string of smaller diamonds embedded into the band running all the way around. The diamonds shimmer, reflecting light in all directions and drawing the eye naturally to the elegant hues of the peridot gemstone. This kind of ring is absolutely perfect for wedding anniversaries or any other occasion when an eternity ring would be appropriate.

Peridot ringEngagement rings have typically been the sole domain of diamonds. Yet those who want a unique design should think about a peridot ring as an attractive alternative. Peridot rings with diamond accents come in many varieties and are a great way to demonstrate the unique qualities of your intended. The best way to show someone how special they are is definitely not to give them the same old tired piece of jewelry that everyone else is using. Peridot engagement rings look amazing and are a great choice for those who value independence.

Another occasion ideal for a peridot ring is a graduation ceremony. Grads will love the look of a high quality peridot gemstone adorning their finger, especially if their school colors included green. If they've received a good education, they may even be aware of peridot's long and colorful trek through history from ancient times to the present day.

This is a mere smattering of ideas on how a peridot ring could be given. There really is no wrong occasion to give one on so long as you value an exquisite aesthetic. With the look of a peridot ring on your side, your gift will be remembered well no matter what occasion it was given on.
